What kinds of car keys are there?

There are four common types, and each needs different work. A plain mechanical key just needs cutting. A transponder key adds a chip that talks to the immobilizer. A remote fob adds lock buttons. A smart proximity key lets you start the car with the key still in your pocket — and needs full pairing.

There is a big difference between losing all your keys and having one spare. With a spare in hand, we clone it — quick and straightforward. With nothing, we start from the lock or the code, which takes more work. Either way, it happens at your car, in one visit. Once the new key is paired, we wipe the lost keys from the immobilizer so they can no longer start the car. How does car key programming actually work?

Your car's immobilizer only trusts keys it has been introduced to. We plug into the car's diagnostic port, put the car into programming mode, and pair the new key so the immobilizer recognizes it. Done properly, the car starts first turn — and only with keys you own.

It is careful work, not guesswork. Each car has its own procedure, and rushing it can lock the programming session — which is why we do it methodically and test everything twice before we hand the key over.

All of this happens where your car is parked. Marina basements have terrible phone signal, but our programming tools do not need it — they talk to the car, not the internet.
